Under the Corset

Title Design/ Animation: Feature Documentary

Rasputina/ Dawn Micelli

Almost a year in the making! The first official documentary on the cello-driven goth band, Rasputina [ http://www.rasputina.com/ ] is coming out soon, and as part of the finishing touches, I was brought on to do the title sequence.

The movie was shot by Dawn Micelli, of the infamous Dawn and Drew Show [ http://dawnanddrew.com/ ], as a behind the scenes documentary while she went on tour with the band through 2009. As you can hear from the initial telephone call that was actually used in the title sequence, Dawn even pitched the idea with the title, 'Under the Corset' in mind.

Dawn wanted a sepia, 'old-timey' film look to it, but I wanted to breathe a little more modern sensibility if only because accurately recreating the film look would take a bit too much time. So I used her words to directly inspire the color palette and especially the transitions in and out of the short sequence. Keep it modern but try to add some texture and atmosphere to ground it a bit.

The music is incredible cello playing, with a bit of modern distortion and digital technology breathed into it. On account of this, I decided to go with a more sleek, vinyl looking corset instead of lace and drapery. And then again for the ornamentation in the background of the sequence, I went more modern-tribal for the same reasons. Those ornamentations are actually photographs of the back tattoo of the Model in the corset, so it all seemed to work out well as a complete package.

Next time around, I'll have to get the singer Melora to model in her fancy duds if there is a sequel made.
